FAQs

Making Coffee

We start with the highest quality and best tasting ingredients.  Our coffee is ground fresh upon ordering and precisely weighed for each cup/shot.  We test and sample our espresso daily to dial in our grinder and machine as conditions change.  Things such as humidity, temperature, and the time since the beans were roasted all affect how well a shot will pull on that particular day.  With years of barista experience, we know exactly how to dial in the perfect shot!

We use an organic espresso blend from our coffee roaster, Black Oak Coffee.

Pour over is a method of hot brewing coffee, and in our opinion is the best method of producing a traditional fresh cup of hot coffee.  When we brew pour over, we grind the beans fresh for every cup.  Unlike many places that brew hot coffee and place it in a thermal container to keep it hot throughout the day, we brew each cup fresh when it's ordered, letting you leave with the freshest cup of coffee on Fort Irwin!

Cold Brew

Cold brew refers to the method of brewing the coffee.  In traditional coffee brewing methods, coffee is brewed within minutes, typically using hot water to extract the coffee flavor from the grounds.  Using the cold brew method, coffee grounds are steeped in cold water for an extended period of time (12-24 hours) to allow the flavors to extract slowly, reducing the bitterness and acidity in the coffee.  The biggest downfall to cold brew is the time it takes to make a batch.  But, if you order from Fox Den Coffee, we've already taken care of that for you!

Yes!  According to a study done by Toddy, cold brew coffee is 67% less acidic than hot brewed coffee.  Our cold brew is slowly immersion brewed in filtered water for 22 hours giving it a smooth, bold flavor.

Since cold brewing produces less acidity than other brewing methods, the coffee's other flavors are more readily detected.  The undertones of chocolate, fruit, and nuts jump to the forefront.  The result is a much smoother coffee.  You may find that you need much less sweetener and cream, if any at all!

Nitro cold brew is cold brew coffee that is infused with nitrogen.  Much like a stout beer, we keg our cold brew, run it through a nitrogen infusion system, and pour it from a stout tap.  When the nitro is poured, tiny nitrogen bubbles fill the cup along with the coffee, giving it an amazingly beautiful cascading effect and a smooth, sweet flavor with a creamy head of foam.
